I didn’t see a site I trusted for the specifics on why the meat tastes so different, but it looks like it results from American cows being raised to be fatter, in a more confined environment, and being fed a wider variety of things (namely grain). Australian cows are grass fed. Note: I’m really not 100% on that information. A lot of those sites were from grumpy animal people, were on less than legit looking sites, or were responses within forums. The beef does taste different for the most part, though!
